Main researcher: Piotr Wasilewski, Ph.D.

The aim of the project is to enable blind and semi-blind people for self-travelling within city boundaries. The designed system is integrated with Public Transport Management System operated by municipal public transportation company (MPK) and radio markers system. Markers are located on trams, stops and points of interest (POI).

Server hosted by Institute of Electronics receives in real time from MPK server information about vehicles localization and running services (route name and direction) as well as traffic conditions (stops caused by accidents or vehicle malfunction). MPK server also sources route paths and timetable data.

A system for aiding urban travel for the blind and visually impaired.

These data allow the user to premeditate the travel with public transportation optimizing travel time, number of interchanges and walking distance. Awaiting for the vehicle user may be informed about estimated vehicle arrive time. Travelling passenger may receive information about number of pending stops and remaining travel time. The user can be automatically informed about major changes in the timetable due to traffic problems (delays, detours). Such information are converted into voice messages by the personal assistant device.

The integration with radio markers system allows to design safe walking paths to tram stops located on platform between lanes of the road.

Localisation of radio markers for public transportation vehicles: a) single platform, b) bidirectional platform, c) double platform.
